Introduction

This tutorial will show you step by step how to solve a grid of hitori of size 6. Previously you must have read the rules and explanations on this page Here's an example grid used in this tutorial :

First of all let us remind of three basic rules of Hitori

  • Each line and each column should not have double-digit
  • two black boxes can not be side by side
  • No white box should be locked (between black boxes )

Several tips exists, however in this tutorial we will use only three of them. Those are sufficient in the majority of the cases, I let you to discover the others ;-P.

Stage 1

During this stage, we are going to use a tips which makes it possible to blacken boxes.
First of all, we are going to begin by spotting the following scenarioes: XX---X or X---XX (two identical figures glued together and the same isolated figure) Sample :

We can not blacken the two boxes of the doublet is prohibited because we have two black boxes side by side, the second basic rule does not allow it. Only one of both will be black, it is therefore necessary to blacken the box isolated (the third) in order not to have several times the same figure on the line/column.

In summary, we can affirm that the isolated box is obligatorily black, on the other hand we do not know for the two others, we thus leave them such as it is for the moment.

Stage 2

During this stage, we will mark the boxes by deduction which are inevitably white. While being based on the rule n°2, all the boxes which are stuck to a blackened box are obligatorily white.

For that we have made available a way to differentiate the mandatory white boxes on the grid, just click twice on a case. The figure will appear highlighted in green.

If we apply this tips to all cases previously blackened we come to this :

Once all the boxes marked mandatory white, you can blacken boxes bearing the same numbers on the line / column because of the basic rule n° 1.

Tip: This tip can be applied whenever a case is black. It will unlock you of more than one difficult situation.

Stage 3

Stage 3 will enable you to blacken additional boxes. This tip consists in locating blocks of three identical digits.

The two figures at the end of the block are black, while the middle box will necessarily white.

Remember, it is impossible to have two black boxes side by side and we do one of these three Figures in white.

Finish the grid

To finish the grid it is enough to reproduce stage 2, then to blacken the boxes in double while following the basic rules.
